Key Terms Used at Northwest Essex

Behavioral health: A general term used to refer to well-being as it relates to both mental health and substance use.

Care Coordination:  Northwest Essex provides integrated health care among mental health, substance use and medical professionals.

Case Management: A range of services provided to assist and support individuals in connecting with needed medical, behavioral health, housing, employment, social, educational and other essential services.

CCBHC or Clinic: Used interchangeably to refer to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics as certified by states.

Consumers: Individuals being treated at Northwest Essex.

Family Services: Families of both adult and child consumers are important components of treatment planning, treatment and recovery. Families come in different forms and, to the extent possible, a CCBHC like Northwest Essex respects the individual consumer’s view of what constitutes their family.

Family-Centered Care: An approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care whose cornerstone is active participation between families and professionals. Northwest Essex recognizes families are the ultimate decision-makers for their children. When care is family-centered, services not only meet the physical, emotional, developmental, and social needs of children, but also support the family’s relationship with the child’s health care providers and recognize the family’s customs and values.

Integrated Health Care:  One stop shopping for medical and mental health services coordinated among professional staff from various disciplines.

Peer Support Services: Services provided by staff members who have lived experienced with a mental or substance use disorder and are in recovery.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services: Mental Health Services that specifically improve a consumer’s role and functioning in an environment (home, school, work, community) so that they thrive and recover.

Partial Care Program: Adult Partial Care is a 5 day per week program that provides non-residential therapeutic treatment and psychiatric rehabilitation for people with serious and chronic mental health conditions.

Recovery: A process of change through which consumers improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.

Recovery-Oriented Care:  Providers identify and build upon each consumer’s assets, strengths, and areas of health and competence to support the consumer in managing their condition while regaining a meaningful, constructive sense of membership in the broader community.

Trauma-Informed Care: An evidenced-based approach to care that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and promotes paths for recovery. At Northwest Essex, we recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma in consumers and families involved in the system and respond by fully integrating knowledge about trauma into treatment plans and services.
